Top assistants

Notre Dame’s and Alabama’s defenses will be led by Broyles Award winners when the No. 1 Irish (12-0) play the No. 2 Crimson Tide (12-1) in the BCS championship game Monday in Miami.

The honor, which is given to the nation’s top assistant football coach and is named after former Arkansas coach Frank Broyles, was won by Notre Dame defensive coordinator Bob Diaco this year after the Irish finished as the top scoring defense (10.3 points per game)..

Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart won the award in 2009.
