Jeff Carter’s resignation as deputy state labor commissioner overseeing the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration comes as he deals with Parkinson’s disease.
Carter tells the Indianapolis Star that he made his decision after became increasingly ill while participating in a drug study.
The safety agency in August issued more than $450,000 in fines against Pilkington North America for violations at its Shelbyville plant after a worker was crushed to death in machinery in 2010.
Carter has been replaced by Tim Maley, who worked in safety management and other positions for Eli Lilly and Co. for 30 years.
