FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Notre Dame offensive coordinator Chuck Martin has some experience winning a title with a freshman quarterback.

During Friday's BCS championship news conference, Martin talked about winning at Grand Valley State with a freshman signal-caller and how he hopes to repeat what happened there with first-year starting quarterback Everett Golson when the No. 1 Irish (12-0) play No. 2 Alabama (12-1) in the title game Monday.

"The only time I've been part of it was, coaches last year at Grand Valley State, we had a freshman quarterback and won the national title," Martin said.

"I would say the year was very similar to this year as far as a young guy growing up on the job, and by the time we got to the national championship game he was a lot different player than he was when he ran out in Dublin, Ireland, against Navy. Very similar from that … not very similar style of quarterbacks, but very similar in terms of watching a young player grow up and really become a player right in front of your eyes. So very similar to that situation."

The quarterback at Grand Valley State was Colin Finnerty, and Martin jokingly talked about the multiple titles GVS won with him and how he hopes to repeat that with Golson at Notre Dame.

"(Finnerty) went on to win three, so we're hoping that history repeats itself. Everybody is worried about that next one, we're trying to make this the first of three, actually," Martin said, smiling. "No one thought that was coming out today, huh? You guys are all way too short-minded with your thinking.

"Trying to think big picture here."
