A couple weeks ago, a player, miffed about a negative tweet I had, pointed out to me just how many shots on goal he had accumulated in a loss.
Aside from plus/minus rating, is there a more meaningless statistic in hockey as it pertains to the quality of play?
Look at tonight's game between the Komets and Cincinnati Cyclones. Fort Wayne had the game's first seven shots, didn't allow one until the 7:38 mark, yet the Komets trail 1-0 after one period.
Shots are meaningless if you don't bury them and if your defense is porous.
Cincinnati's John McFarland scored by skating from his own blue line, through two defenseman and beating goalie Marco Cousineau between the legs.
On the positive side, this is the first game in ages in which the Komets did oushoot the opposition early on.
