Why No. 5?

Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o wore No. 5 long before he became a star for the No. 1 Irish (12-0), who play No. 2 Alabama (12-1) in the BCS championship game Monday.

And the All-American has a simple reason why he wears that number.

“It’s kind of a simple story,” Te’o said Thursday during a news conference in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. “My dad and I were driving around Laie (Hawaii), where I grew up, he asked me, ‘Son, when you play football, what number do you want to be?’ And since I was 5 years old, I said, ‘5.’

“I’ve managed to be lucky enough to carry on that little tradition that I started when I was 5 years old.”
