City urges neutering of male cats

Male cats from six Fort Wayne ZIP codes have been targeted for a one-day “Neuter for a Nickel” event on Feb. 9, Animal Care & Control officials announced Friday.

Residents from ZIP codes 46802, 46805, 46806, 46808, 46815 and 46818 are eligible to schedule surgeries for up to seven male cats per household for 5 cents per cat, Animal Care & Control said.

More than 350 cats per targeted ZIP code were turned in to the shelter during 2012.

Scheduling for the nearly free procedures will begin Monday on a first-come basis by calling 427-1244. A valid ID will be required to verify residency in one of the targeted ZIP codes, and each cat will be licensed to its address after surgery, Animal Care & Control said.

The surgeries are provided by volunteer veterinarians, and costs are covered through donations.
