The nation's largest school voucher program could expand again during the next school year under proposals the Indiana General Assembly could take up in the coming months.

Lawmakers who convene Monday are expected to consider increasing the amount of aid available to younger students and ending a requirement that students attend public school for a year before they are eligible.

The voucher program provides public subsidies to low- and moderate-income families who want to send their children to private school. The state Supreme Court is weighing its legality.

Democratic Rep. Vernon Smith of Gary says vouchers hurt urban school districts. He wants the General Assembly to wait and see what effect the program is having before making more changes.

More than 9,000 students are receiving vouchers this year.
