V.J. Beachem doesn’t know where the time has gone, but he is OK with everything feeling like it is moving at warp speed.MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly understands that speculation comes with success.
Kelly led the No. 1 Irish (12-0) to Monday’s BCS championship game against No. 2 Alabama (12-1) in his third season with the university.
This year’s run has prompted his name to be mentioned as a possible candidate for one of the seven head coaching vacancies in the NFL. But during Saturday’s media day at Sun Life Stadium, Kelly didn’t sound like a coach ready to leave.
“I think when I took the job at Notre Dame, I think I said it was a dream job,” Kelly said
“I think from my perspective I’ve got the best job in the country, NFL, college, high school, whatever. I just look at the place that I’m at and thankful for the opportunity that I have.”
Kelly wouldn’t confirm or deny that anyone has reached out to him or his representatives about moving to the NFL.
“If that did occur, then all that stuff is secondary to this football game,” Kelly said. “This is the biggest game that I’ve ever been involved in, so my focus is 100 percent on this football game.
“All that other stuff, that happens when you’re winning football games. I’ve been through this a lot in my career. It’s flattering if there is interest, which I don’t know that there is, but again, that is such a secondary topic for me right now, it’s all about this game.”
Nick Saban, who is trying to win his fourth BCS title and third at Alabama, has also dealt with rumors of his returning to the NFL and possibly erasing the memory of his two-year stint with Miami.
Saban was more straightforward on his thoughts of leaving for the NFL.
“I don’t have any unfinished business in the NFL,” Saban said. “It’s not even something I want to do.”
