Notebook: Shots don't fall late for Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE – A.J. Hammons made a layup with 4:28 remaining in Tuesday's game against Ohio State.

It was Purdue's last field goal in a 74-64 loss at Mackey Arena.

The Boilermakers missed their last eight shots – many from close range.

Hammons layup got Purdue within 70-62. Purdue final two points came on free throws by Terone Johnson with 2:55 remaining.

Purdue shot just 38.8 percent from the floor.

"We have to do a better job of finishing and then eliminating those bad possessions," Purdue coach Matt Painter said.

To the point

Freshman point guard Ronnie Johnson had 11 points, seven assists and six rebounds in the loss.

"I thought I played pretty good. I could have done better on defense. As far as shot selection, I have to finish those when I'm close to the bucket and I've got to knock down those free throws (1 of 5 from the foul line on Tuesday)."

The opponent's view

Ohio State coach Thad Matta liked what he saw from Purdue.

"You've got a starting freshman point guard (Ronnie Johnson) who is a heck of a player. They are right there, like all of us. They play hard, they execute. I like the team. They are going to continue to get better each and every game.

"That's what (Painter) does. He's awesome. He's an excellent coach."
