5-year sentence in boiling-water attack

SOUTH BEND – A South Bend woman who pleaded guilty to aggravated battery for pouring boiling water on her boyfriend as he slept has been sentenced to five years in prison.

A St. Joseph County judge on Tuesday sentenced Tearsa Broadnax, 41, in the June 2012 attack that seriously injured 52-year-old Rickey Clark as he was sleeping in the couple’s South Bend apartment.

Broadnax had pleaded guilty in November to aggravated battery in connection with the attack. She had told police she poured the boiling water on Clark in retaliation for a previous fight.

Clark suffered severe burn wounds to his arm from the boiling water.
