Class basketball update

At least one bill has been filed regarding class basketball though time has already expired on it. Senate Bill 320 - authored by Sen. Jean Leising, R-Oldenburg - would have required a public question to be placed on the 2014 general election ballot asking whether the Indiana high school basketball tournament should be played under a single class system. But the results would be advisory only, meaning the Indiana High School Athletic Association would not be bound by the outcome. Senate President Pro Tem David Long, R-Fort Wayne, already killed the bill by placing it in the Rules Committee that he chairs. This committee is where unpopular, controversial and sometimes unconsitutional ideas go to die. "My personal sentiment is I wish we still had single class basketball. I loved the tournament," he said. "But the world has changed so much since then and it's just too late to go back." Long noted that schools have adjusted and coaches and students love the class system. And he said as athletics have become more intense, the competitive difference between the classes is just too great.
