101, indeed.

Lara's Library (Sort Of): Knit 101

Lara Neel - The Journal Gazette

Knit 101 was published by Vogue Knitting as an offshoot of knit.1 Magazine. (The magazine, sadly, is no more, but you can buy back issues from that website.)

The point of knit.1, if I remember correctly, was to make some room in the crafty publishing world for people who have some skills, but want to focus on fashion-forward knitting and crochet patterns without being super-deep into learning a ton of techniques.

This book is very much in line with that goal, which isn't to say that it's only "super easy" projects, it just doesn't assume that everyone wants to work intarsia using 8 colors.

Chapter one is a great starting-from-zero section, including how to knit in a few different ways and suggestions for your knitting bag (like keeping a notebook.)

This is followed by 10 more chapters about knitting and 8 chapters on crochet.

I like the way the chapters are structured. Each one starts with a general discussion of, say, ribs and other textured stitches. It then moves on to several patterns that use that technique. The patterns appear to be clearly-written and there are lots of illustrations and photographs to help even the newest crafter get his or her bearings.

It might even give me enough confidence to try crochet.

If you are looking for a book to kick-start or expand your knitting or crochet skills while indulging your playful side, this is the one for you.
