Algeria: 2 dead in attack on gas complex

ALGIERS, Algeria – Algeria’s state news agency says there has been a second fatality, a British citizen, in the militant attack on a natural gas complex in the desert.

The agency cited provincial officials for news of the death, which came after an early morning attack by Islamists. The militants were holding an undetermined number of foreigners hostage.

Six other people have been wounded.

The natural gas complex, the third largest in the country, is a joint venture of British Petroleum, Norway’s Statoil and the Algerian Sonatrach company located some 800 miles (1,300 kilometers) south of the capital near the Libyan border.

The Algerian Interior Ministry said heavily armed gunman in three vehicles attacked the complex early Wednesday.

Militants have claimed the attack is in revenge for Algeria’s support of France’s intervention against rebels in Mali.
