Subdivision to shrink golf course

– An 18-hole golf course will soon be downsized after the Allen County commissioners agreed to rezone a portion of the site Friday.

Oakmont Development Co., which developed Deer Track Golf Course in 1989, will restructure and downsize the 18-hole golf course, converting it to a nine-hole course.

A portion of the 161 acres was rezoned from agricultural to single-family residential. Developers plan to build a new subdivision called Deer Hollow, said Michelle Wood, senior planner for the Department of Planning Services.

Plans call for 58 lots at the site, on the east side of the 18600 to 19100 blocks of Tonkel Road near North County Line Road. The new homes will use well water but will connect to Fort Wayne’s sewers, Wood said.

That will allow 20 homes in Deer Track Estates – a smaller, older subdivision on the other side of the golf course – to connect to the sewer system as well, she said.

The rezoning came to the commissioners with a recommendation for approval after the Plan Commission unanimously voted in favor of the proposal, Wood said.

Two neighbors raised concerns about stormwater flow, Wood said.

Those issues will most likely be discussed and worked out during the easement planning stage, she said.

The commissioners also unanimously approved rezoning another site on Diebold Road.

About 2 acres in Diebold Park on the east side of the 11200 block of Diebold Road were rezoned from single-family residential to commercial.

The land is just west of the proposed Steeplechase Apartments and east of an undeveloped commercial area near Parkview Heath.

The acreage includes a pond, which will be redesigned and used for retention, she said.

“It won’t affect the apartments or the commercial area,” Wood said.

The clubhouse for Steeplechase Apartments will be on the east side of the pond when completed, she said.
