Statement as issued Wednesday by the Whitley County Economic Development Corporation:
COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. (Jan 22, 2013) – Michigan-based Kerr Real Estate LLC today announced plans to redevelop the former Scott’s Food & Pharmacy building, located at 496 W Plaza Drive in Towne & Country Plaza, as a multi-tenant retail facility anchored by Dunham’s Sports, the Midwest’s largest sporting goods chain.
“We are excited to be launching our latest commercial development project in Columbia City,” said Kerr Real Estate president Jeff Kerr, “The former Scott’s building is a prime location for Dunham’s Sports and the property has great potential for further development.”
Kerr Real Estate, which manages properties in Indiana and Michigan, has over one hundred years of combined experience in virtually every facet of commercial property management, brokerage and development. The development company plans to begin building and site modifications this spring, which will include opportunities for building expansion and outlot development. Dunham’s Sports, which offers a full line of traditional sporting goods and athletic equipment as well as a wide variety of active and casual sports apparel and footwear, will occupy nearly 30,000 SF of the end-cap building. Dunham’s Sports anticipates opening the Columbia City facility this summer.
“On behalf of Columbia City, I am pleased to welcome Kerr Real Estate and Dunham’s Sports to our community,” said Columbia City Mayor Ryan Daniel, “Reuse of the former Scott’s building is a high priority for our community and we look forward to working with the EDC and other local partners to support this endeavor.”
This evening Columbia City Common Council will consider a request for ten-year tax abatement to phase-in new property taxes on more than $1.5 million in proposed building improvements. Kerr Real Estate estimates the project will create up to 60 new jobs and involve more than $4.5 million in developer and tenant investments.
