I don't know if I should be trying to scrounge up a few hundred thou today, or feeling more than a twinge of sadness.
Just read that Mike Eruzione is auctioning off his stick and jersey from the Miracle on Ice game, and Steve Christoff is putting up his gold medal. Apparently, at least in Eruzione's case, it's not because they need the money, which would really be sad. Eruzione, for one, wants to take what he gets from the auction and sock it away for his grandkids.
Good for him.
No, the twinge of sadness comes from the thought that whoever buys this stuff will prove unworthy of it. Some snotty rich guy who'll stick the items in his den just to one-up his snotty rich friends.
Here's hoping that doesn't happen. Here's hoping someone who truly appreciates the moment these items represent -- for me, the single most memorable sporting moment of my lifetime -- buys them and does them the appropriate honor.
