D’Arcy returns after treatment

Local itinerary unclear after new cancer

D’Arcy

– The Rev. John M. D’Arcy, bishop emeritus of the Fort Wayne-South Bend Catholic Diocese, is back in Fort Wayne after being diagnosed with and receiving treatment for cancer while he was visiting his home in Massachusetts during the holidays.

D’Arcy returned Wednesday afternoon, said Sean McBride, spokesman for the diocese.

“I do know that he has been visiting with medical staff here in Fort Wayne (on Thursday), and discussing a treatment plan moving forward.”

Doctors found cancer of the lung and brain after the 81-year-old bishop went to an emergency room near the family home in Brighton, Mass., near Boston, shortly after Christmas. He publicly revealed the diagnosis Jan. 2.

D’Arcy has received radiation treatments to ease symptoms but not cure the cancer, McBride said, and it has not been determined whether he will be able to resume any of his previously planned schedule.

In a written statement released Friday, D’Arcy wrote that it was “good to be home.”

He thanked the current bishop, the Rev. Kevin C. Rhoades, and “all the people of our beloved diocese for the prayers of so many, which have been poured out upon me.”

“They are a tremendous consolation. Please continue them,” he wrote.

D’Arcy was diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer in 2010.
