Area police ‘tree’ chase suspect, 23

A Winona Lake man who tried to outrun police over the weekend was caught after officers found him stuck in a tree, according to Warsaw police.

About 3:40 a.m. Saturday, police saw a Chrysler 200 speed out of Lucerne Park in Warsaw without headlights on. When an officer tried to stop the car, the driver fled, reaching speeds of more than 100 mph, police said.

The car went north on Indiana 15 and turned west onto Kosciusko County Road 600 North. Because of snowy conditions, police lost sight of the car but caught up to it after it crashed into a tree, police said.

Following footprints in the snow from the driver’s door to nearby woods, officers and a police dog found the driver about 8 feet off the ground with his knee stuck in a tree.

Firefighters freed the driver, identified as 23-year-old Jeremy J. Neibert, and he was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital in Warsaw, police said.

Neibert, who denied he was involved in the pursuit, had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, police said. Results of a blood test are pending.

Three other people in the car were released without being charged.

After Neibert was treated at the hospital, he was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail on felony charges of resisting arrest with a vehicle, fleeing law enforcement and criminal recklessness. He posted a $2,000 bond to be released Monday.
