4 from area receive caddy scholarship

Four Fort Wayne-area high school seniors have just been awarded the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship, a full tuition and housing college scholarship, beginning this fall.

The four are Bellmont's Benjamin Eichhorn (caddy at Orchard Ridge), Homestead's Karly Gotschall (caddy at Sycamore Hills) and Bishop Dwenger's Maria Schafer (caddy at Fort Wayne Country Club) and Frank Vandeputte (caddy at Sycamore Hills).

Evans Scholars are golf caddies who are selected based on four criteria -- a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character.

The four students are awarded the scholarship to Purdue, where they will live in the Evans Scholarship House on campus. The scholarship is valued at more than $70,000 during a four-year period.

The Western Golf Association has overseen the Chick Evans Scholarship Program through the Evans Scholars Foundation since 1930.

The WGA conducts the Hotel Fitness Championship, a Web.com Tour Finals event coming to Sycamore Hills from Aug. 26 to Sept. 1. All proceeds from the tournament will be donated to Evans Scholars and local Fort Wayne charities.
