House explosion suspect wants trial moved

– A second suspect in a deadly Indianapolis house explosion is seeking to move his trial outside the city because of publicity about the case.

WISH-TV reported that Mark Leonard filed a motion for a change of venue with the Marion County prosecutor’s office. The motion cited publicity following the Nov. 10 explosion in the Richmond Hill neighborhood that destroyed 33 houses and killed two people.

Prosecutors object to the request and say it’s possible for Leonard to get a fair trial in Indianapolis.

Police eyeing teens at Circle Centre mall

Police plan to set up metal detectors at the entrances of a mall in downtown Indianapolis and put more officers on the streets in response to recent violence by unsupervised teenagers.

WRTV-TV reported Friday that the added security measures begin this weekend at Circle Centre Mall. Unsupervised youth who are not immediately picked up when they leave the mall will be told either to board a bus or go to a monitored site to await their ride home.

The extra security comes after a youth fired a gun last weekend near the mall, which has been the focus of repeated disruption.

Indy mayor asks to run 4 more schools

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard could oversee four struggling schools taken over by the state last year in a move that could make him one of the city’s most active school administrators.

Ballard will ask the State Board of Education on Wednesday to give him authority to oversee Arlington, Howe and Manual high schools and Donnan Middle School in Indianapolis.

All were part of the Indianapolis Public Schools system until the state took them over last summer after six straight years of failing performance.
