Man killed, toddler wounded in E. Chicago shooting

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (AP) — East Chicago police report someone fired into a vehicle in the city, killing the 25-year-old driver and wounding his 3-year-old son.

East Chicago police Lt. Marguerite Wilder told the Post-Tribune of Merrillville that 25-year-old Willie Cook was killed and his son was wounded while strapped in a child restraint seat behind his father. The car was stopped in front of Cook's grandmother's house. The Times reported the toddler was shot in the leg.

East Chicago Police Chief Mark Becker said police don't believe Cook was the intended target.

It was the second murder in the city in less than a week. The city had three homicides last year, which Becker said were the fewest reported in nearly 40 years.
