Conservancy urges northeast Ohio land preservation

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — A conservancy group says about 7 percent of the land in 14 northeast Ohio counties has been preserved as green space, and the group is urging greater land conservation in the region.

The Akron Beacon Journal says the Western Reserve Land Conservancy reported about 295,000 acres preserved in the area.

The covered counties stretch between Erie and Ashtabula counties along Lake Erie and then south to Wayne and Stark counties.

The report is the first comprehensive look at local land conservation in the area.

The report says the region's land preservation rate has been about 1 percent every 10 years. It could take decades more at that rate to reach the amount of land experts recommend for permanent protection, which is 10 percent to 15 percent.
