Warsaw chase ends with pickup in ditch

Officers used a stun gun to subdue a man who tried to outrun police in a pickup truck Saturday night, the Warsaw Police Department said.

Shortly after 11 p.m., an off-duty police officer saw a man and woman fighting in a pickup truck in Warsaw. The man quickly accelerated the truck and left the woman behind. The man then stopped the truck and backed toward the woman, apparently trying to run her over, police said.

The woman eluded the truck and was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital to be treated for head and hand injuries suffered during the fight, police said.

The man in the truck sped away from the scene, and with a description from the off-duty officer, police found and briefly stopped the vehicle. Officers ordered the driver out of the truck, but he drove off, speeding through downtown and running red lights, police said.

Police chased the truck out of town until it stopped in a ditch at Ferguson Road and Kosciusko County Road 250 South. The driver walked away from the truck, disregarding orders to stop. Officers then shocked him with a Taser before arresting him, police said.

The driver, identified as Robert T. Garcia, 36, of Warsaw, was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail on charges of resisting law enforcement, battery resulting in serious bodily injury, criminal recklessness with a motor vehicle, driving while suspended and fleeing law enforcement. He was in custody Monday, with a bail of $5,000.
