State lawmakers taking up Sunday alcohol sales bill

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana legislators are taking up a bill aiming to end the state’s status as the last one in the country that bans Sunday retail alcohol sales.

The House public policy committee has scheduled a hearing for Wednesday morning on the bill. It would broaden a state law that currently restricts Sunday alcohol sales to restaurants, bars, breweries and wineries.

Supporters of the change maintain that allowing Sunday carryout alcohol sales would bring in more tax revenue for the state and would be more convenient for customers.

Liquor store owners have long opposed allowing Sunday sales. They say that their overhead costs would increase and hurt them in competing with large grocery stores already open seven days a week.
