CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Indiana struggled with turnovers early, but the Hoosiers settled down in the final 7½ minutes of the first half to take a 41-29 lead over Illinois into halftime in Assembly Hall.
The No. 1 Hoosiers had six turnovers in the game's opening 10 minutes, and they were clinging to a 19-18 lead with 7:22 to play in the first half.
But IU didn’t turn the ball over again in the half and a 9-2 run gave the Hoosiers a 28-21 lead with 4:48 to play in the half.
After giving up a basket to Illinois with 4:24 left in the half, Indiana went on a 9-0 run for a 37-23 lead with 2:12 left in the half.
Will Sheehey gave Illinois two points with 1:27 to play as he was called for a technical for screaming in a player’s face after a dunk. Illinois’ D.J. Richardson sank both free throws to cut IU’s lead to 39-27.
Cody Zeller finished the scoring with two free throws with 1.8 to play in the half and IU went into the locker room with the 12-point lead.
Sheehey leads the Hoosiers with 10 points, and Christian Watford and Zeller each have eight points.
Richardson and Brandon Paul each have eight points to lead Illinois.
