Driver badly hurt in west-side crash

Police believe weather was a factor in a crash that badly injured a young driver on West Jefferson Boulevard on Thursday night.

Police were called at 9:43 p.m. to West Jefferson Boulevard and South Bend Drive on Fort Wayne’s west side.

A black Chevrolet Cavalier was eastbound on West Jefferson when the driver tried to pass another vehicle, lost control and fishtailed into a guardrail, pinning him inside, police said.

The driver, who police described as a young male, was taken to a hospital in critical condition. His condition was upgraded to serious at the hospital, police said. His name was not released.

Fog, light rain and mist hindered visibility, which was only about five miles, police said, and the road was slick.
