DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings’ struggling special teams came up big in a narrow win over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.
Niklas Kronwall’s third-period goal broke a tie, and Pavel Datsyuk had a goal and an assist in Detroit’s 2-1 victory against the Oilers.
Both Red Wings goals were scored on the power play, and Detroit killed seven of eight short-handed situations. The Red Wings came into Saturday ranked 29th in penalty-killing among the 30 NHL teams.
I thought we did a pretty good job, Kronwall said. We would have liked the other one back. Overall we did a good job of staying aggressive and not giving them too much room.
Henrik Zetterberg had two assists, and Jimmy Howard made 23 saves for Detroit (6-4-1).
Rookie defenseman Justin Schultz scored the lone goal for Edmonton (4-4-3), and 40-year-old Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 28 shots in his first game of the season.
COYOTES 1, SHARKS 0, SO: In San Jose, Calif., Mike Smith made 33 saves through overtime and then turned aside two more shots in the shootout to carry Phoenix.
The only offense in the entire game was provided by Phoenix’s Mikkel Boedker and Radium Vrbata, who both netted shootout goals against Sharks goalie Antii Niemi.
JETS 1, SENATORS 0: In Ottawa, Ontario, Al Montoya made 33 saves, and Alex Ponikarovsky scored the only goal to lift Winnipeg.
Ponikarovsky broke the scoreless deadlock 5:57 into the third period.
MAPLE LEAFS 6, CANADIENS 0: In Montreal, James Reimer made 37 saves and Phil Kessel had a goal and two assists to lead Toronto. Leo Komarov added his first NHL goal 59 seconds into the game.
FLYERS 4, HURRICANES 3, OT: In Philadelphia, Danny Briere scored 1:47 into overtime to lift Philadelphia. Jakub Voracek, Matt Read and Brayden Schenn also scored for the Flyers, who went 3-0-1 on a four-game homestand.
DEVILS 3, PENGUINS 1: In Newark, N.J., Adam Henrique and Bobby Butler scored power-play goals during a 2:12 span in the third period as New Jersey extended its winning streak to four. The loss snapped Pittsburgh’s five-game winning streak.
CAPITALS 5 PANTHERS 0: In Washington, Troy Brouwer scored two goals and Braden Holtby stopped 27 shots and assisted on Brouwer’s second goal to lead Washington. Mathieu Perreault and Joel Ward each added a goal and an assist, and Alex Ovechkin also scored for Washington, which snapped a three-game losing streak.
SABRES 3, ISLANDERS 2: In Uniondale, N.Y., Ryan Miller made 41 saves, and Alexander Sulzer scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period Buffalo won its second straight.
The Islanders dropped their fourth straight despite outshooting Buffalo 43-15.
BRUINS-LIGHTNING, ppd.: In Boston, the Bruins postponed their game against Tampa Bay because of the blizzard that dumped more than 2 feet of snow on the area. No makeup date had been scheduled yet, according to a Bruins spokesman.
