IOC pins itself

So here for your consideration is this Grecian urn, 3,000 years old or thereabouts, the product of your mind's eye although urns like it actually exist. Some enterprising treasure seeker has dredged it up from the bottom of the Aegean Sea.

Know what's on it?

A mosaic of two guys wrestling.

Fast forward to 2013, and a bunch of people who've forgotten where they came from. They comprise the International Olympic Committee, charged with running the modern Olympics that, as we all know, are modeled after the original ancient Olympics of Greece. Today, they've announced they're dropping wrestling from the 2020 Olympics.

Yes, you heard it right. Wrestling -- which predates the modern Olympics altogether -- has been booted out of the IOC's list of 25 core sports.

Know what's still there, though?

Badminton. And table tennis.

Knowing what's coming on board for 2016?

Rugby. And golf.

Yes, we all remember the legendary exploits of Socrates "Jack" Nicklaus of Thebes, threading a wedge through the Acropolis on his way to the coveted golf laurel wreath back in the day ...

Good lord. Golf, table tennis and badminton are core Olympic sports, but wrestling -- a truly core Olympic sport -- isn't?

Somewhere Pericles weeps.
