3 charged in naked whipping on video

NEWARK, N.J. – Three people are under arrest in New Jersey’s largest city after a video surfaced that showed a naked young man being whipped because of his father’s debt.

Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio said the three young adults, who are affiliated with a street gang, are charged with aggravated assault and robbery.

The video shows a 21-year-old being forced to strip and then whipped with a belt, supposedly because his father owed someone $20.

DeMaio said the victim sustained welts and abrasions during the August attack. Police say the man didn’t require hospitalization.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker criticized people for not coming forward sooner.
