Oscar Pistorius covers his eyes in court in Pretoria, South Africa, on Friday at his bail hearing.

More on Pistorius

So now Olympic star Oscar Pistorius is not just being charged with murder, but premeditated murder.

And we will forgo, here on the Blob, the standard stunned reaction. The fateful flaw of all of us in sports media, after all, is our tendency to (as the great New York Herald sports editor Stanley Woodward once said) "God up" athletes. But it's self-evident that we should be no more stunned that Oscar Pistorius might have killed someone in cold blood than if Oscar Mayer might have.

An athletic gift is no more a hedge against human failing than any other occupational gift. Surprise, surprise, and, well, duh, too.

But I'll let one of America's great journalists lay all that out, in words far more artful than mine.
