Ligonier inmate dies at New Castle prison

A Ligonier state prison inmate died today at an Indianapolis hospital, one day after being found battered at the bottom of a stairwell inside New Castle Correctional Facility, Indiana State Police said tonight.

State police at Pendleton said Jeremiah K. Taylor, 37, died at Methodist Hospital, where he had been flown from Henry County Hospital in New Castle.

Police said investigators were sent to the prison Thursday night because an inmate had been found unconscious. In a statement, they said Taylor was found about 11:05 p.m.

Taylor had been at the prison since July 2012, and was serving eight years on a child-molesting conviction from Noble County, the statement said.

The prison is run by GEO, a private company contracted by the Indiana Department of Corrections.
