Seminary professor gets reserves upgrade

The Rev. Daniel L. Gard, professor of exegetical theology at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, has been nominated by President Obama to serve as a U.S. Navy rear admiral in the role of deputy chief of chaplains for reserve matters.

Before he assumes this highest rank in the Navy Reserve, which as a reserve post does not involve active duty, he will need to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

“I know I speak for the entire CTS community when I say how pleased and proud we are that Dr. Gard has been nominated for this promotion,” said the Rev. Lawrence R. Rast Jr., Concordia Theological Seminar president. “Dr. Gard’s service to this seminary, the church at large and to his country has been exemplary and provides an excellent example of a good and faithful servant of Jesus Christ.”

This appointment does not affect his seminary service. Gard, who is currently completing a tour of duty as Joint Task Force Guantanamo chaplain, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, intends to return to campus by Holy Week and resume his teaching responsibilities.
