South tops Logansport to claim regional title

Behind Ariana Simmons’ 20 points and 15 rebounds, South Side captured the Class 4A regional championship at Kokomo on Saturday by beating Logansport 71-55.

It was the second regional title for the Archers since 2008. They will face Warsaw (24-1) in the semistate showdown Saturday.

South (23-3) took a 20-point lead into the fourth quarter against the Berries, who defeated Snider 56-50 in the afternoon semifinals.

Simmons, who has committed to IPFW, was 8 of 15 from the floor and 4 of 5 from the free throw line. She also had eight offensive rebounds.

South advanced to the title game behind Simmons’ 21 points in a 58-56 win over Westfield.

In Snider’s loss, the Panthers were led by Meredith Shipman’s 19 points. Deja Wimby was the only other Snider player in double figures with 12.

VALPARAISO REGIONAL: In Class 4A, Warsaw (24-1) advanced to the semistate with a 42-41 victory over Merrillville.

Jennifer Walker-Crawford led Warsaw in the title game with 19 points, and Nikki Grose added 13.

The Tigers reached the championship with a 49-42 win over Penn behind Grose’s 22 points.

ROCHESTER REGIONAL: In Class 2A, Bishop Luers blew past Boone Grove 67-40 in the championship game behind Tashayla Sutorius’ 23 points, 15 from Alison Butler and 11 from Emma Wolfe.

Luers (14-11) will face Eastern (Greentown) (21-3) in the semistate.

The Knights had little trouble in the semifinal game, downing Westview 71-48. Alison Butler led the way with 21 points.

TRI-CENTRAL REGIONAL: In Class A, North Vermillion ousted Southern Wells 34-25. Sam Rhodes led the Raiders with 14 points.

Boys basketball

COLUMBIA CITY 55, NORTHROP 49: Drew Benedict scored 17 points and Derek Hinen had 13 as the host Eagles beat the Bruins. Bryson Scott had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Bruins. Cory Womack added 16 points.

NORTH CENTRAL 63, CARROLL 48: Host North Central outscored the Chargers 38-21 in the second and third quarters to earn the victory.

Chandler White led Carroll with 19 points, and Kyle Mallers had 10.

BLACKHAWK CHRISTIAN 59, HAMILTON 37: Joey Morlan scored 15 points and Riley Reimschisel had 12 to lead the visiting Braves.

ANGOLA 37, WEST NOBLE 35: Simon Brown’s basket broke a 35-all tie to lead host Angola. Brown finished with 12 points, and Justin Davis had 13 for the Hornets.

Keith Gibson led West Noble with 12.
