Hoosiers No. 1 in both polls

Indiana holds the No. 1 spot in The Associated Press Top 25 for the ninth week this season.

The Hoosiers (23-2, 11-2 Big Ten) received 43 first-place votes as they stayed atop the poll for a third straight week. No. 2 Miami received 20 first-place votes, and No. 3 Gonzaga received two first-place votes.

Indiana also landed the No. 1 ranking in the USA Today coaches poll after being No. 2 in that poll last week.

On Tuesday, Indiana travels to play Michigan State (22-4, 11-2), which moved from No. 8 to No. 4 in the AP poll and from No. 8 to No. 5 in the coaches poll.

The top spot in the Big Ten will be on the line, and possibly a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, when the Hoosiers and Spartans meet for the second time this season. IU won the first game 75-70 in Assembly Hall on Jan. 27.

Indiana coach Tom Crean said he isn't using what is at stake Tuesday to motivate his team.

"The bottom line is you just keep focused on what you can control, and there's a lot of things you got to work to control in this game," Crean said during a teleconference Monday.

"The moment that you start getting too caught up in the external factors of it rather than the internal factors of how you play, how you compete, how you concentrate, how you rebound – then you're asking for distractions. We really don't need any distractions at this point. We need to stay completely locked in to how we play.

"They know it is a big game. They know the stakes. They get all of that. The moment we start spending too much time on that is the moment we get away from what's most important, which is our improvement."

Other Big Ten teams ranked in the AP Top 25 are No. 7 Michigan, No. 18 Ohio State and No. 19 Wisconsin.

Other Big Ten teams ranked in the USA Today coaches poll are: No. 7 Michigan, No. 17 Wisconsin and No. 18 Ohio State.
