Baseball team beats MLB prospect

IPFW opened its baseball season with a 2-0 victory over Indiana State. The game was played in Huntsville, Ala.

What makes the Mastodons' win noteworthy - other than Jason Kalber, Danny Tursell and Kyle Sorensen combining for a two-hit shutout - was that they beat Indiana State pitcher Sean Manaea.

Manaea is a 6-foot-4 left-hander who made a name for himself in the Cape Cod League, where he had 85 strikeouts and just seven walks in 51 2/3 innings.

IPFW got four hits off the MLB prospect (he has a mid-90s fastball) in four innings and scored an earned run. It gave Manaea the loss.

IPFW (2-2) begins a three-game series at Tennessee-Martin on Friday.
