FORT WAYNE -- An investigation is under way after a Fort Wayne police officer fatally shot a suspect in a pharmacy robbery early Wednesday at a north-side apartment complex, the department said.

Officers were sent to the CVS Pharmacy at 2802 E. State Blvd. about 2:30 a.m. about a report of an armed robbery and saw a man matching the description of the suspect running from the business, according to a statement issued by Officer John Chambers, a police spokesman.

Police chased the man into an apartment building in the 1900 block of Hobson Road and saw that he was armed, at which time he was fatally shot, police said.

Investigators have reviewed video surveillance from the store and have confirmed the shooting victim and the armed robbery suspect who was shot are the same person, according to a statement issued later by Officer Raquel Foster, a police spokeswoman.

The suspect, whose name has not been released pending family notification, died at the scene. His identity will be released by the county coroner’s office, police said.

As is departmental policy in such cases, police said, the two officers involved have been placed on administrative leave -- a 31-year police veteran who fired on the suspect and a second officer who was in close proximity to the shooting.

The department said it will ask the Indiana State Police to conduct an independent, parallel investigation, which is also standard practice after a fatal police-action shooting.

The incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.

There were no reported injuries to any officers or the public at the pharmacy, police said.
