Bears GM says team will meet with Te'o

INDIANAPOLIS – Chicago Bears general manager Phil Emery never said former Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o's name when he met with reporters at the NFL combine Thursday in Lucas Oil Stadium.

But Emery did say the Bears plan to meet with the All-American and ask Te'o about the fake-girlfriend hoax that came to light in a Deadspin.com story Jan. 16.

Te'o has acknowledged continuing to talk about a fictitious woman with whom he thought he had a relationship, and her death, after he found out he was part of the elaborate scheme. But Te'o has also said he was not involved in perpetrating the hoax and was the victim in the incident.

"This will be my 16th draft. Every individual is unique," Emery said. "Believe me, there are unique stories across every college class. So, is that unique? No. That is a situation and issue that has to be dealt with and worked through. Obviously, at some point we will sit down and talk to the player about it and see where he is at on it.

"That situation, as far as somebody having something that is different than what has happened to other people, I would say that is true with a good portion of this college class. Everyone, each individual is going to be unique and they're going to have their own unique situations with their family that they have had to deal with, off the field, on the field, situations that come up in life. It's about how they handle it. Can they still produce and be a productive member of your team?"

Te'o is scheduled to talk to the media Saturday, and he will work out with other linebackers Monday.
