Warsaw man jailed on battery count

A domestic dispute involving a handgun led to the arrest of a Warsaw man early Friday, according to the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department.

About 1:20 a.m., a report of gunshots sent sheriff’s deputies and Warsaw police officers to Westhaven Estates mobile home park in Warsaw. They found a woman who had fled from one home to another to get away from Joseph Hettinger, who apparently fired the shots, the sheriff’s department said.

The woman told authorities that Hettinger had made comments that caused her to fear for her life. He later went to the home where she had sought shelter and threatened the homeowner with a 12-gauge shotgun, witnesses told authorities.

Officers found several guns in Hettinger’s home, including a 9 mm handgun that had been fired three times in an unknown direction, the sheriff’s department said.

Hettinger was arrested without incident. He and the woman were both bleeding and had minor injuries from an earlier domestic dispute, the sheriff’s department said.

Hettinger, 33, was being held at the Kosciusko County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail. He faces preliminary charges of felony domestic battery and two counts of felony intimidation with a deadly weapon.
