SUV driver dies in I-69 crash

The driver of an SUV died early Sunday after his vehicle slammed into a guard rail and center barrier on Interstate 69, Fort Wayne police said.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The Allen County Coroner's Office will confirm and release his name.

Northbound traffic on I-69 between Illinois and Goshen roads remains closed as of 6:30 a.m. while the Fatal Alcohol Crash Team investigates.

A preliminary investigation indicated the silver Chevrolet sports utility vehicle was traveling north when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The SUV struck a guard rail on the east side of the highway, traveled across the road, struck the center barrier and came to rest near the 308.6 mile marker, the police said.

While at the scene, officers discovered that the SUV struck the rear of a bus before crashing into the guard rail.

The bus was located in the 9800 block of Coldwater Road. Officers are currently on the scene, interviewing the bus driver.

The driver of a red pickup also traveling north tried to avoid the crash. However, the driver lost control of his pickup, which spun around and struck the rear of the SUV before coming to rest, police said.

The driver of the pickup, who was not identified, reported no injuries.

The deceased driver was not wearing a seat belt, according to investigators. It is unknown whether speed, alcohol or any other factors played a role in the accident, the police said.

The crash remains under investigation by Fort Wayne police and the Allen County Coroner's Office.
