Only about 20 people showed up for the Inner City Cancer Walk Sunday afternoon at Freimann Square. Then again, the walk, sponsored by the Mirror Me Foundation, has competition.KOKOMO – Police in Kokomo will begin patrolling big events on horseback this summer as part of an effort to fight crime and increase police visibility.
Chief Rob Baker says city officials are still deciding how often the mounted patrols will be used. The Kokomo Tribune reports the patrols would cover the downtown area, special events and the city’s park and trail system.
The city plans to rent horses initially to reduce startup costs and is looking for horse owners who are interested in participating in the program.
The Tribune says Kokomo will join Indianapolis as the only other Indiana city with an active mounted patrol. Indianapolis officers undergo 16 weeks of training.
