Teixeira out of Classic with sore forearm

– Yankees slugger Mark Teixeira has pulled out of the World Baseball Classic after injuring his right forearm swinging in the batting cage.

Teixeira was set to start at first base for Team USA but was scratched from the lineup for Tuesday’s exhibition game against the Chicago White Sox.

Team USA said Teixeira will be sidelined eight to 10 days.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said in Tampa, Fla., that X-rays on Teixeira’s hand and wrist area came back negative.

Girardi said Teixeira did not have this problem before leaving the Yankees camp.

World Classic

In its first of two exhibition games before the World Baseball Classic, Team USA fell into a four-run hole through five innings, and needed three RBI by Giancarlo Stanton and a run-scoring triple by David Wright to forge a 4-4 tie with the Chicago White Sox in a game called after nine innings. … Ray Chang drove in two runs and China (1-2) rallied with five runs in the bottom of the eighth to beat Brazil (0-3) 5-2 in Group A of the World Baseball Classic in Fukuoka, Japan. … In Taipei, Taiwan, Jonathan Schoop’s two-run homer helped give the Netherlands (2-1) a spot in the next round with a 4-1 victory over Australia (0-3). … In Taipei, Taiwan, Jungho Kang hit a two-run homer with two out in the bottom of the eighth inning to give South Korea a 3-2 victory over Taiwan (2-1), but the South Koreans (2-1) missed out on a spot in the next round because they lost a tiebreaker against the Netherlands.

Torre: Replay use to expand for 2014

Major League Baseball intends to expand the use of instant replay for the 2014 season and will study which calls to review and how to do it over the course of this year.

Joe Torre, an MLB executive vice president, said Tuesday that league officials plan to visit Miami during the World Baseball Classic and various spring training sites to examine camera angles and other factors that will help them develop a plan.
