Stolen lighter fluid leads to meth charge

The theft of a can of lighter fluid led troopers to arrest two Kendallville men on charges of possessing meth ingredients, according to the Indiana State Police.

About 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Daniel Campbell and Zachary Knight entered the Marathon gas station in Kendallville and stole a can of Zippo lighter fluid, state police said.

Campbell came outside and got into a pickup truck. Soon afterward, Knight left the Marathon, and the gas station owner rushed outside, telling Knight to stop, state police said.

Knight ran, and Campbell started to drive away but was quickly stopped by a pair of troopers. Two other troopers chased Knight and caught him after a short distance, according to state police.

In the truck, the troopers found lithium batteries, the can of lighter fluid, and on Campbell, they found Sudafed pills – all of which are used to make meth, state police said.

Campbell, 36, and Knight, 19, were both arrested and charged with possession of precursors with the intent to manufacture methamphetamine.
