SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — South Bend officials tired of repeated police runs to the same properties are considering imposing a nuisance fee on the owners.

Common Council member Tim Scott says he introduced the measure after police made 526 runs last year to an apartment complex on the city's east side. The South Bend Tribune reports those runs cost the department about $132,000.

Police leaders support the ordinance and say it's about ensuring resources are used fairly.

The ordinance would designate any property that has five or more valid police complaints or code violations during a 60-day period as a "problem property" for one year.

The property owner would have to pay a $250 fee for each subsequent complaint or violation during that period.
