Key matchup: Two of the Big Ten’s best big men will square off today in the Boilermakers’ A.J. Hammons, a 7-foot freshman, and the Gophers’ Mbakwe, a 6-8 senior. Mbakwe leads the Big Ten in rebounding and averages 10.2 points. Hammons is 11th in the league in rebounding, averages a conference-leading 2.3 blocks in Big Ten games and averages 10.5 points.

The skinny: Purdue forward Sandi Marcius, who has averaged a career-best 6.3 points and 3.9 rebounds in the last seven games, may not be available for today’s game. Marcius injured his ankle in Wednesday’s 80-75 home loss to No. 7 Michigan, and coach Matt Painter said during a teleconference Friday that the junior’s availability was “up in the air.” … The Boilermakers are facing the Gophers for the first time this season. Purdue has won seven of the last 10 games against Minnesota and holds a 97-80 advantage in the series. … Purdue has lost five of its last seven games. … Minnesota is 3-4 in its last seven games.
