Mall policy on teens raises profiling concerns

INDIANAPOLIS – Community and church leaders say they’re concerned that policy changes designed to keep peace at an Indianapolis mall plagued by fights recently will lead to racial profiling of black teens.

Simon Property Group plans to hand out fliers this weekend urging parents not to drop off children at the Castleton Square Mall on the city’s north side unsupervised.

WRTV reports (http://bit.ly/YghiW7) that mall officials plan to disperse groups of four or more juveniles or those who are swearing or disrupting the peace.

The move follows incidents last weekend that included two fights and four arrests.

Church leaders met with Indianapolis police Chief Rick Hite on Friday to discuss their concerns.

Police said they will enforce the law, not mall policy.
