Boilers to keep playing

Purdue isn't done playing basketball, yet.

The Boilermakers accepted an invitation to play in the College Basketball Invitational on Sunday night, and they will play host to Western Illinois in a first-round game at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

"We're happy for the chance to continue our season and excited that the Gazelle Group (which hosts the event) afforded us this opportunity," Purdue coach Matt Painter said in a statement. "I'm confident that this will be a positive step for the future of our program."

This will be Purdue's first time to play in the 16-team tournament, which has been played for six years.

Purdue enters the CBI after being eliminated in the first round of the Big Ten tournament when it fell to Nebraska 57-55 Thursday in Chicago.

The Boilermakers (15-17) are 4-0 against Western Illinois (22-8). Purdue won its last meeting with the Leathernecks 83-48 Dec. 9, 1999, in Mackey Arena.

The winner of Wednesday's game will face the winner between Vermont and Santa Clara on March 25. Purdue is 4-0 all-time against Santa Clara and has never faced Vermont.
