South Side's Simmons an Indiana All-Star, notes

A few notes from Thursday, including South Side's Ariana Simmons begin named an Indiana All-Star.

Simmons an All-Star

Simmons was named an Indiana All-Star on Thursday.

The senior forward is one of 14 players on the team that will battle the Kentucky All-Stars on June 14 in Louisville, Ky., and June 15 in Indianapolis.

"I was very excited," Simmons said. "To be picked out of so many girls in the state, it was good recognition to receive, and it is an honor. It was one of my goals since I made it on the Junior All-Stars last year. I wanted to push myself to try to make it on the Indiana All-Star team."

Simmons joins South Side coach Juanita Goodwell, who was previously named as an assistant, on the all-star team. The Indiana All-Stars also will have two exhibition games against the Indiana Junior All-Stars.

"Knowing that I have a few more games with one of the best coaches I have ever had in my life is great," Simmons said. "It is a great opportunity to be guided by her again."

The IPFW recruit averaged 14.1 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game for the Class 4A state runner-up Archers.

Simmons is the first South Side girls basketball player to be named an Indiana All-Star since Sydney Weinert in 2009. Sha'la Jackson was also in All-Star in 2007.
