Wells County family receives farming honor

Statement as distributed Friday by the Indiana House of Representatives House Republican Caucus:

STATEHOUSE – State Representative Matt Lehman (R-Berne) congratulates the Munson family from Wells County for receiving the Hoosier Homestead Award. The award was presented today by Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann and Agriculture Director Gina Sheets at the Indiana Statehouse.

The Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes families with farms that have been owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more. The Munson Farm has been in operation since 1912. Located in Craigville, Ind., the Munson family was recognized for their hard work and commitment to agriculture.

“The Munson family has had a profound impact on agriculture in Indiana,” said Rep. Lehman. “Since the founding of our state, agriculture has played a significant role in our livelihood. None of that would be possible if it weren’t for the tireless work of families like the Munsons.”

The program began in 1976 to acknowledge the contributions of families who have made to Indiana agriculture. More than 5,000 farms have been recognized since the program was established.

Two awards ceremonies are held each year, in the spring and summer, to commemorate the achievements of the many outstanding Hoosier farmers across the state.

“We often take for granted that we can go to the grocery store and buy fresh, locally grown products. We forget that someone worked sunrise to sunset to make sure that food was there,” said Rep. Lehman. “Farming can be a very thankless job, so it is very important for me to express my thanks to the Munson family for all they have done and continue to do.”
