Murder charge for drive-by shooting

Thomas

A man accused of killing another man during a drive-by shooting last week was formally charged Monday with murder in Allen Superior Court.

Josiah C. Thomas, 22, has admitted to shooting Gerelle R. Borum, according to court documents.

Officer Raquel Foster, a police spokeswoman, said the shooting was not random or connected to drugs or gangs, but she declined to release the motive detectives have identified.

The afternoon of March 19, Thomas was driving when he saw Borum walking along Rudisill Boulevard near Indiana Avenue. Thomas told investigators he stopped and shot Borum with a .32-caliber handgun, court documents said.

Medics took Borum, 22, to a hospital in critical condition where he later died, police said.

Witnesses gave police a description of a red-and-white truck that drove off after the shooting. Officers pulled over a truck matching the description near Rudisill and Lafayette Street, about a mile away, and Thomas, the driver, was arrested, police said.

In the truck, police found a shell casing of the same caliber and make as the ones found at the shooting scene, court documents stated.

Along with the murder charge, Thomas, of the 6200 block of Salisbury Drive, also faces a felony count of carrying a handgun without a license. He was being held Monday at the Allen County Jail without bail.
