No gun-control events planned in city

Fort Wayne apparently will not be among cities where Mayors Against Illegal Guns will have advocacy events or gatherings Thursday as part of the group’s National Day to Demand Action.

The organization plans a public rally and petition drive at 11 a.m. outside the Statehouse in Indianapolis, and Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson will have a 1 p.m. news conference at Gary City Hall.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns has scheduled similar events in two-dozen cities in 14 states. The rallies will coincide with TV ads running in 13 states, including Indiana, that urge viewers to tell their members of Congress to vote for legislation requiring nearly universal background checks for gun buyers.

Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry is a member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns but has a scheduling conflict Thursday, according to spokesman John Perlich.

Henry “supports the group’s efforts to reduce gun violence,” Perlich said Wednesday in an email, noting the mayor conducted a January news conference with Angola Mayor Dick Hickman to discuss their support for federal gun-control legislation.

Henry will be in Indianapolis on Thursday to participate in the Mayors Institute, sponsored by the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns. He will lead a forum on solid waste issues, Perlich said.

Henry’s forum at the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs will take place about the same time as the Statehouse gun-control rally.
